Meet Matt

I started life as an Officer in the British Army and decided to start coaching a few years ago having had many years of experience racing, training, trading, and sponsoring in triathlon and wanting to devote myself full time to the sport. I have developed my coaching knowledge from climbing through the triathlon age group rankings to become a podium elite and learning lessons from making mistakes on the way. I have had the privilege of working with some of the best coaches in triathlon and professional triathletes, who I continue to work with to this day.

My journey in the sport started back in the late 80's when my brother in-law became a pro triathlete and setup one of the first non-Ironman affiliated race series in the UK. I was about 13 at the time. Fast forward several years and I entered my first race which was the New Forest Middle Distance, where I came in the top 10 athletes and the bug bit.

I went on to race 70.3 and Ironman across Europe and hit the podium on a few occasions. Then after a huge build up for the inaugural Ironman Ireland I ignored a stomach virus and woke up one morning blind and in chronic pain. The virus had turned into full blown meningitis. As I couldn't race I turned my attention to trade and opened Neuff Red where I had the privilege of working alongside, sponsoring and having exposure to some of the best athletes, coaches and nutritionists from the tri world, such as Jan Frodeno, Gustav Iden, Cody Beals, Laura Siddall, Nikki Bartlett, Dave Scott, Dan Plews & Tom Davis, to name a few. I also had the privilege of meeting and working with amazing age group athletes of all levels who became ambassadors for my company.

Whilst I have had quite a few great race results over the years the one that I always feel most proud of is my big day out at IM Maastricht. I finished in sub 12hrs after breaking my arm in three places, skinning my back, rupturing a quad and multiple lacerations and holes down to the bone, due to crashing the bike 20mins in. (Ooops)

Along the way I have gained experience from the best in the industry and continue to work closely with pro athletes, nutritionists and brands.

My Coaching Philosophy

I believe in treating every athlete as an individual and not as part of a chain, working closely with each one to develop a training plan and schedule that fits around their requirements and life demands. Over the years I have worked with and been coached myself by some of the most well know and highly regarded coaches in the world and this gives me the added bonus of pulling on additional resources and knowledge in real time and continuing to learn along the way, as you can never know too much and there are always new things to work on.

I have had a fantastic time in triathlon, and I want to pass that experience, and the enthusiasm and love I have for the sport, to other athletes. I specialise in 70.3 and Ironman and look at training and racing as a complete entity, building athletes through the process to hit their goals on the finish line.
