Meet Phil

“I live with my wife and daughter in St. Helens, Merseyside. In addition to my coaching practice, I work as a Lower Limb Extended Scope Physiotherapist. I have competed in triathlon for over 15 years and have 20 years of experience in injury prevention and rehabilitation. I feel I have a unique perspective on the athlete journey from this background.

My coaching style revolves around 2 core principles; a strong scientific base and building even stronger personal relationships with my athletes. I have a passion for both self-learning and for teaching and coaching others. I feel it is as important to facilitate athlete learning, understanding and to empower them to make training and lifestyle changes to meet their goals. I am equally happy seeing novice athletes conquer their fears and achieve personal goals as I am seeing more experienced athletes take to the podium.

Personally, I achieved greater levels of performance and personal success through employing a triathlon coach and in 2019 achieved my personal dream of qualifying for the Ironman World Championships in Kona. I would not have achieved this dream without a coach guiding me and closely monitoring my personal performance progression. With both a medical and sporting background as well as a busy personal life over the years I have learnt how to find the balance to reach my potential and achieve my goals in all aspects of my life.

Finally, I believe that the vast majority of us have huge potential beyond what we think and that through the “application of consistent intelligent effort” we can reach new heights and enjoy our training and racing more".

NICK HALL,  AG 60-64 “You’ll have to go a long way to find a Tri coach so dedicated to each of his athletes with a unique capability of adapting plans for each one.”…    READ MORE >>

I want to commend TTT but especially Triathlon Coach Phil Ellison. Having done a couple of Ironman events previously and having signed up for IMUK, I knew I needed specialised coaching and guidance. I had no hesitation in contacting Phil, who I knew at club level and who had been recommended by others. Being a Veteran AG athlete with a long list of serious injuries picking Phil to provide a customised training plan was a no-brainer. He has a medical background to compliment his vast experience of Triathlon competitions at GB level. His knowledge at all levels is unsurpassed in my experience. You’ll have to go a long way to find a Tri coach so dedicated to each of his athletes with a unique capability of adapting plans for each one.

MARK LIVINGSTON,  “The best triathlon related decision I have made is to sign up with Phil”…    READ MORE >>

I have been coached by Phil since the start of September 2019. If I was looking for a coach the first thing I would want a review to tell me is he or she any good?! The answer in Phil's case is a massive YES! So some numbers to back that up. I have just finished my second test week after the baseline ones at the start of the Programme. In that time my FTP has gone from 258 to 293 (PTW 4.14) and my min/mile over the 20 min run test from 6.21 to 5.49.

But a coaching relationship is more than just numbers and on that count I have been equally pleased. He is constantly monitoring where I am, what have I got on in real life and adjusts the programme in real time. So if I need the advice to back off it comes and if I could have pushed that bit harder I also get that. As a professional physiotherapist you can also be confident that the S&C sessions Phil sets come from a real understanding of what works.

The best triathlon related decision I have made in a long time is to sign up with Phil. In this case #coachingworks

DAVE O’CONNELL ,  “Since being coached by Phil, I have improved more in 12 months than I had done in 6 years.” …   READ MORE >>

I have been coached by Phil since October 2019.

Prior to this I had just gone from plan to plan off the internet, going through the motions thinking I was improving. How wrong I was.

Since being coached by Phil, I have improved more in 12 months than I had done in 6 years. My swim improvement finally meant I cracked the hour mark for IM distance swim this year and the bike sessions meant that I’ve put 40w on my FTP.

Phil is aware of the balance needed between training and work/home life and adjusts the sessions to suit. The feedback and information that he gives is positive when you have hit or exceeded the session and equally, he’ll let you know when you haven’t, or could’ve done a bit more. But he will explain where and why rather than just “could’ve gone harder today”. Thanks to his experience, knowledge and help, I have finally done what I’ve been aiming to do for years, which is to qualify for GB age group World Champs in 2021.
