Meet Tom

I began my Triathlon journey following a number of injuries playing rugby to a high standard. Requiring various surgeries over the years I found my body starting to struggle to keep up with the battetering week in and out and knew that I needed a sport that I could be fully engaged with for the long term so I transitioned into the multi sport world. Starting with a local duathlon and then completing Lands End to John O Groats over the course of 9 days. I signed up for a middle distance triathlon as another challenge for myself. Bearing in mind I couldn’t swim well, I managed to teach myself over the course of a long cold winter. After completing this race I joined up with a coach at TTT who I have worked with ever since. I see the learnings I have had from this along with the other coaches in the business as pivotal to my broad coaching knowledge that I have now. From understanding the benefits of having a coach in so many aspects; from education in a different sport, to technical improvements, general guidance, mental support and giving me clarity as to the best direction to a achieve the greatest progress. Even as a coach myself, I continue to value working alongside a coach myself for the two way process we now have

My coaching philosophy:

One of the most important things that I have learnt from my time as an athlete and coach within TTT is the power of community. The environment that we have built is one of safety, support and encouragement and probably of thing that I enjoy most is helping athletes new to the sport learn, thrive and achieve their goals as they evolve along their own personal journey. With that in mind my athletes goals, needs and desires are the primary focus of my coaching ethos. This is why communicating with my athletes on a frequent basis is so important to me. My athletes needs are at the forefront of their training planning and this allows me to work well with individuals of all abilities and experience levels. I also coach with my local triathlon club creating individual training programs and session plans to support both the adults and juniors to enhance their skills and performance across all disciplines. In ‘real life’ I am also a father and having a young family I understand the importance of balancing training around a busy lifestyle.
