My Coaching Philosophy
Heather’s approach to coaching is personal and holistic, shaped by her 15+ years of experience as an accomplished age group athlete. Her mission as a coach is to foster long-term participation in the sport emphasising enjoyment and balance, while consistently seeking performance gains throughout the athlete’s entire triathlon journey. Complimenting her experience as an athlete, Heather carries a number of coaching certifications so that the experiences as an athlete are enhanced through ongoing coaching education and the best practices in the sport.
With over thirty years as project director in a large global architectural practice, Heather has mastered the balancing act of a demanding corporate career, personal life, and training and competing at a high-level. Thus, she is versed in reframing athletes’ time constraints or pressures via an individually customised training programme focused on efficiency and maximising the daily schedule. This bespoke training plan is one that considers the athlete’s unique starting point and personal commitments with focus in achieving their goals.
Additionally, Heather’s longstanding sports and corporate backgrounds yield an ability to be adaptable, flexible and intuitive - traits which foster success as a coach not only with the beginner triathlete but also those seeking performance gains after years in the sport.
Meet Heather
With a strong swimming background (an age-group swimmer from the age of 10), age-group/collegiate diver, and marathon runner; my journey into the sport of triathlon began in my early 40s. When I completed that first sprint triathlon in 2013, I had no preconceived ideas to where the journey would take me. I simply wanted to understand the sport, to challenge myself with something new, and to train smart. So, like many triathletes, it only takes one event and you are hooked. I totally fell in love with the sport – or really, the lifestyle it embodies. For me it was and continues to be all about the process, endless discovery about yourself, and continuous learning. I love the training, the variety, the complexity of putting three disciplines together into a single event, and the tri community.
Upon reflection, my triathlon journey has grown incrementally to the current focus on longer distances and race goals which have evolved and matured. Therefore as a coach, my mission is to foster sustainable participation and longevity in the sport. Triathlon has been an integral and positive component of my life for over 15 years, so I hope to transfer that passion to those that I coach. Reiterating my love of the journey – it is about consistently doing the work, being patient with & trusting the process. . There is so much potential in the sport that no matter the fitness background, age, or stage of life; our participation in triathlon will evolve and grow with us.
